The Origin on VTT

GSE 1967 to VTT 2019

In 1967 then District Governor John H. Clay selected Herb Hezlep III, member of Monrovia Rotary Club in District 530 (now5300) California-Nevada to chair the Group Study Exchange Committee (GSE) for the inaugural exchange between District 530 California-Nevada and Rotary District 245 in Western Australia. Herb immediately made contact with Bill Holywell, the selected leader of the West Australian group.

The intensive and diverse eight-week itinerary was meticulously planned by Herb and his committee. It involved the organization of 105 host families, a multitude of study visits, speaking engagements and meetings, 29 Rotary lunches and the WA’s Team’s participation in the District Conference in Las Vegas.Fast forward to March, 2007, eight men gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their exceptional GSE experience and to acknowledge its impact on their lives. All seven of the original 1967 team were present and remarkably Herb, good friend to all the team, made his thirteenth trip to Australia just for this occasion. One can only imagine the reminiscing that took place that night!

Over the years, Herb and Liz generously hosted team members and their families and other West Australian friends at their home on many occasions. Both Herb and Bill have done Rotary proud through their commitment to the ideals and objectives of the GSE Scheme, their respective leadership roles and their generosity.

It is because of this rich background and their commitment to the GSE program that Herb and Liz have generously donated to the Rotary International Foundation in order to create an endowment fund to support the Vocational Training Team (VTT) between the Districts 9455 & 9465 in Western Australia and District 5300 in California-Nevada.
